Safe Mode: a guide for parents
For shared family devices and teenagers.
Cat Browser is not directed at children under 13. Safe Mode reduces unsuitable content, but it does not replace adult supervision.
What Safe Mode does
- Blocks sites by category: adult content, gambling, and harmful sites (scams, phishing, malware, ransomware).
- Filters Cat Search: hides adult results and suggestions.
- Shows a blocked page: when a site is blocked, the browser shows a notice instead of the content.
How it works – and why it is private
The app downloads compact, signed domain lists from our server (rebuilt daily from public lists). Every address is matched on the phone; the sites you or your child visit are not sent anywhere. If you report a wrong block (or a site that should be blocked), only that domain and its category are sent, with no identifier.
How to turn it on
- Open Cat Browser and go to Settings.
- Open Safe Mode and switch it on.
- Try opening a site that should be blocked to check it works.
Limits to know about
- No filter is perfect: new sites may not be on the lists yet, and sometimes an ordinary site is blocked by mistake.
- Safe Mode only applies inside Cat Browser, not to other apps or browsers on the phone.
- Anyone who can open Settings can turn it off. Combine it with the Android tools below.
Tips for parents
- Use Google Family Link to approve app installs, block other browsers and set screen-time limits.
- Lock your own phone, and create a separate user profile for your child if the phone supports it.
- Talk with your child about staying safe online: don’t share personal details, and tell you about anything upsetting.
- Check from time to time that Safe Mode is still on.
Report a wrong block
Use the report button on the blocked page, or e-mail the domain to [email protected].
